Untitled Film Stills
These photographs were inspired by Cindy Sherman’s series of “Untitled Film Stills”. While film displays continuity, I was fascinated by photography’s ability to tell an entire story in one frame. Throughout the 12 pictures, rather than portraying a chronological fashion, each individual photo reveals a piece of a larger story or concept.
The idea I wanted to explore was the frustration many teenagers face in their transitional phase from children to adults. This is an awkward place for many to be caught in, as teens are both just beginning to establish their identity as well as enjoy what seems like their last excuses to act impulsively. The maturity and simultaneous rebellion is reflected in the couple’s smoking habits, fast car, and diner visit. Their embodiment of such adult personas is juxtaposed with not only their youth, but also moments of reflection that capture their uncertainty and naivety as to what lies ahead. The vintage edit and setting demonstrates the timelessness of this love story and similar search for identity in any context.
